Add images to a post

You can add up to 10 images while you create a post. They all go in one tray. The order you pick them in is the order they publish in.

Before you start

Open the Create Post dialog. See Create your first posts with AI or Write a post yourself to get there.

Steps

  1. Under Image, pick a source: Select from stock, Generate with AI, Upload, or Media library. Pick the same one again to close it.
  2. Choose an image. It shows up under Added (N). A small tag on it says where it came from: Stock, AI, Upload, or Library.
  3. Add more from any source. You can mix them. One stock photo and one AI image in the same tray is fine.
  4. To take out one image, select the × in its top-right corner. The others stay put.
  5. To change the order, take images out and add them back in the order you want. You can’t drag them in this dialog. You can also fix the order later on the post’s page.
  6. At 10 images, all four source buttons turn gray. You’ll see “That’s the maximum of 10 images. Remove one to add another.” Take one out to make room.

How each source works

  • Select from stock opens a stock photo search. You can pick several at once, and videos too. See Find and use stock photos.
  • Generate with AI makes 4 images from a few words you type. See Generate images with AI.
  • Upload opens a box for your own files. It’s covered below.
  • Media library opens “Choose from library”. It shows only images. Search by name, select Used or Unused, or change the order with the sort menu. Select every image you want, on any page. Each one shows a number. That’s the order they go in. Then select Add N images at the bottom.

Images already in the tray show Added in the library, and you can’t pick them again. When the tray would be full, the other images fade out and a note at the bottom says why.

If you add the same image twice, nothing happens. It’s only in the tray once.

Uploading your own images

Select Upload. Drop image files on the box, or select Browse to choose them from your computer. You can send more than one at a time.

This dialog doesn’t check a file before it sends it. The server checks it. If the server turns a file down, a red message shows near the bottom of the dialog. It names the problem. See “If something goes wrong” below.

Images you upload or make with AI here also show up on the Media page. If you close the dialog without making the post, they’re cleared out after about a day. Stock picks stay in your library either way.

Posts with no image

You can leave the tray empty. Most platforms will post just the text. A few won’t. Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest need an image or video. YouTube needs a video.

The dialog only warns you about Instagram. If you select Instagram with an empty tray, you’ll see “Instagram requires an image or video — its post can’t publish until you add one here or on the post’s page.”

You can still create the post. But you can’t approve a platform’s version until it has the media it needs. Add it on the post’s page. See Platform limits and requirements for each platform’s rules.

Platforms that take fewer images

Some platforms take fewer images than the tray holds. Twitter/X takes 4. Pinterest takes 5. YouTube takes none at all, since it only posts video.

If your tray holds more than a platform takes, a note names it, for example “Twitter/X will use the first 4.” When two or more platforms are over, they share one note: “Twitter/X will use the first 4; Pinterest will use the first 5.” With YouTube picked, the note says “YouTube will use the first 0.” That means no images go to YouTube.

The note makes it sound like the extra images are just skipped. That’s not quite how it works today. On the post’s page, that platform’s version can’t be approved while it has too many. You’ll see a message like “X allows up to 4 image(s); this post has 5. Remove 1.”

Here’s how to fix it:

  1. Open the post and go to that platform’s tab.
  2. Select Customize media for Twitter / X. That platform gets its own copy of the images.
  3. Remove the extra images there. The other platforms keep them all.

Changing images later

Images aren’t locked in once the post is created. Open the post from the Posts page to add, remove, or replace images before it publishes. See Edit a post before it publishes.

If something goes wrong

“That’s the maximum of 10 images. Remove one to add another.”: The tray already holds 10 images. That’s the most a post can have. Take one out to add a different one.

“{N} picks weren’t added — the tray is full.”: You picked more than would fit. Say you chose 5 stock photos with 3 spots left. The ones that fit went in. The rest didn’t. With stock photos, the note adds “They were still imported to your library.” You can still find them later under Media library.

“{Platform} will use the first {N}.” (for example, “Twitter/X will use the first 4.”): Your tray has more images than that platform takes. Its version can’t be approved until it has no more than that number. Follow the fix in “Platforms that take fewer images” above.

“Instagram requires an image or video — its post can’t publish until you add one here or on the post’s page.”: You picked Instagram with an empty tray. You can make the post anyway. Add an image on the post’s page before you approve it.

“Unsupported file type: {type}” (for example, “Unsupported file type: image/heic”): The server doesn’t take that kind of file. Use a JPG, PNG, GIF, or WebP image.

“File too large: {N}MB exceeds {M}MB limit for image”: The image is bigger than your plan allows. Each plan sets its own size limit, and the message shows yours. Make the file smaller and try again.

“You’ve hit your plan limit”: Your media storage or item count is full. Select Upgrade your plan, or free up space. See Manage your storage space.
