Generate images with AI

Describe a picture in a few words, and AI makes 4 options for your post. You can do this while you create a post, or later on the post’s page. Both open the same Generate with AI window.

Before you start

Open the window from one of these places:

In the Create Post dialog, under Image, select Generate with AI.
On the post’s page, find the Default images card and select Generate with AI. On a phone, select ＋ Add image first. An image you add here goes to every platform that uses the default images.
On one platform’s tab of the post’s page, select or generate with AI. If you see Customize media for {platform}, select that first. The image goes to that platform only.

Steps

Open Generate with AI. If you already wrote what the post is about, the app suggests a prompt for you. You’ll see “Suggesting a prompt from your post…” for a moment. Then the suggestion fills in the Image Prompt box. In the Create Post dialog, it reads what you typed in What’s this post about (or in Post, if you’re writing it yourself). On the post’s page, it reads the post’s text.
Keep the suggestion, change it, or type your own. If you change it, a Restore suggestion link brings the suggestion back.
If your brand has brand colors set up, a Brand colors: On toggle shows under the prompt box. Leave it on to steer the images toward your brand’s colors. Select it to turn it off.
Select Generate, or press Enter. A grid of 4 tiles shows up, each with a spinner and “Generating…”. They fill in with your images once the whole batch is done.
Select an image to see it bigger. Select Back to grid to see the others again.
Select Use This Image to add it to the post. The window closes and the image is added.

The images come out square. To change the shape, crop the image in the editor later. See Edit an image.

If some images fail

Sometimes not all 4 images work. If at least one does, the window shows the ones that worked. A note under them says “{N} of 4 images failed to generate”. You can still look at and use any image that worked. If none work, the window shows the error message instead.

How images count toward your plan

Your plan includes a set number of AI images each month. Only images that come back count. A failed image doesn’t use up any of your allowance.

You need at least 1 image left to start. A batch always asks for 4. If you have fewer than 4 left, the batch still runs, and every image that comes back counts. So a batch can take you a little past your limit.

When you’ve used them all, the window tells you as soon as it opens: “You’re out of AI image credits.” Generate turns gray. Select Upgrade to continue to go to Billing.

Your plan can also cap how much AI you use in a month, in dollars. Reaching that cap shows the same message. See Understand your plan and usage.

If something goes wrong

“{N} of 4 images failed to generate”: Some of the 4 images worked, but not all of them. Use one that did, or select Generate again.

“You’re out of AI image credits.”: You’ve used the AI images your plan includes this month. Select Upgrade to continue, or wait for your plan’s month to start over.

“You’ve hit your plan limit”: The same limit, caught after you selected Generate. The message shows how many you’ve used out of your limit, like “You’ve used 50 of 50 image generations this month.” Select Upgrade your plan to raise it, or Maybe later to close the message. If your trial or subscription has ended, it says “Pick a plan to keep going” instead.

“rate_limit_exceeded”: You asked for images too many times in a short time. Opening the window with post text counts too, because it asks for a suggested prompt. Wait a while, up to an hour, then try again.
